George McCrae

Leah McCrae has been performing since she was 7 years old – well, being the daughter of two hugely successful performing artists (Gwen and George ‘Rock you Baby’ McCrae) may have something to do with it! Unsurprisingly, music has always been part of her life: from Church choirs in her home town of Palm Beach, to TV talent shows, live performances with people such as Usher and, of course, opening for both her parents at their live gigs.

Leah's debut single, 'I Get Busy', reached number 6 in the Urban Charts and her new single, ‘All This Love That I'm Giving’ deserves none other than the top spot.

A cover of her mother's track, Leah seamlessly adds her own unique stamp to perfection and comes complete with top mixes by Richard Earnshaw and Portsmouth's Groovefinder.

Gaydar Radio’s Gary H met up with the songstress to find out more.

Leah, can I start by saying what an absolute pleasure it is to be talking to you!
The pleasure's all mine.

You're without a doubt a unique artist in your own right, but you have hugely successful parents. Have they influenced your work?
Yes, most definitely!

It must be a real kick opening a live show for them?
Well, It's more of an honour for me. Just to see the look on their faces of how proud I made them.

I have to ask, 'Rock your Baby' is one of the most recognised songs when people talk about your father. It was the record of 1974 and has subsequently sold around 52 million copies. How does he feel when the record gets remixed and hits the dancefloors?
He feels amazed and overwhelmed to this day. He never thought that one  song could move and impact so many lives.

Is his the sort of phenomenal career you’d like to look back on yourself?
Of course. I think it's every artists dream to reach that kind of success.

So what's your secret - how do you stay looking so foxy?
DNA. That’s all I can tell yaw!

What can we expect from any future collaborations?
At the moment there aren't any future collaborations with any other artists. However, there is  a possible follow up to my single,  ‘All This Love That I'm Giving’ on Groovefinder US. Plus you can expect a long overdue album in the new year.

Your vocal skills have seen you perform across many genres including r’n’b, soul and house. Who and what inspires you musically?
Who inspires me? I would have to say the fans. When someone walks up after a performance and tells me how I gave them goose bumps when they heard me singing, well that's inspiration in itself.

What inspires me? Well, music itself. It’s so versatile and influential. Personally, listening to music is like having a different orgasmic experience.

What do you do when you’re chilling out?
Basically I'm chilling when I’m with family and close friends. I mean it’s entertainment itself. It's like watching a movie. We have action, drama and lots of comedy! The Osborne's have nothing on us. Or, I just chill out by enjoying life and writing songs about it .

All This Love That I'm Giving, by Leah McCrae is released on Groovefinder US Records on 18 October 2004
