BBC Radio 4 presenter Jenni Murry was honoured at the Media Society annual awards this week.

Murray, who has presented Woman's Hour for more than 20 years, was recognised for her services to the media.

At the event, held at the Landmark Hotel, Baroness Kennedy described the presenter as "a feminist icon"

"You're the breasts of Venus, you're King Kongs penis, you're the top," she added in Cole Porter style.

Lesbian writer Val McDermid praised her support for gay women.

"Nobody has done more for lesbians. She brought us into the tent by treating us the same as everyone else and with great generosity."

Edwina Currie said she was "by far the finest broadcaster we have, and knocks John Humprhys into a cocked hat."

President of the Media Society Geraldine Sharpe Newton said Murray was “accomplished, warm, tenacious, courteous and exacting”.

The society brings together journalist working across all media, and holds regular meetings and debates.

In 1999, Murray was given the OBE for services to broadcasting.

In December 2006, she announced at the end of Woman's Hour that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

When she returned in 2007, she said the most upsetting moment was losing her hair, and used this as an item on the centrality of hair to definitions of femininity.

Murray lives partly in London in a basement flat and in Cheshire in a Peak District farmhouse. She has a partner, David, of twenty six years standing and two sons.
