A new competition to find the sexiest, dirtiest and most talented drag king has been launched.

King of the Castle has been organished by Lenna Cumberbatch, who runs the lesbian listings site Gingerbeer.co.uk.

The event is the first national Drag King contest in the UK and is open to all.

The competition will feature heats in evening/club wear, sleep/swim wear and performance, where Drag Kings (new or experienced) will entice celebrity judges to crown them King of The Castle.

The audience will also be entertained and titillated by the choreographed Castle Dancers and the Schmooze Brothers troupe, with witty comperes Helen Sandler and Rupa Sarkar.  DJs Cautious and Beboy Rocker will provide music throughout the evening.

Judges lined up for the competition are Mojisola Adebayo, Deni Francis, Sadie Lee and Julie McNamara.

Elly Clarke Photography will be conducting a photography documentary as well as providing a photography portfolio for the winner, with other prizes provided by Beautiful & Damned.

Drag Kinging has a long London history with male impersonators such as Hettie King and Vesta Tilley from London’s music hall scene in the early 1900s.

The 1990's saw a resurgence of Drag Kings in London, throughout Europe and in the USA.

Since 2003, Club Wotever has given Drag Kings from around the world a London venue for their acts and the club is collaborator with the King of the Castle event.

King of the Castle will take place on Sunday 4 May at 7.30pm in the newly refurbished Purple Turtle Bar in Camden, north London, with a shiny new stage on which Kings can strut their stuff.

By the end of the evening, one lucky person will hold the title “King of the Castle”… and another will be the “Dirty Rascal”.
