Stevie Wonderful took the title ‘King of the Castle’ at the UK’s first National Drag King competition this weekend.
Held on Sunday 4 May, Stevie - real name Fiona King - stole the show with her performance of Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours to take the title.
King, a wheelchair user, is a first time Drag King but after some initial trepidation said she was “in it to win it."
Other contenders included Otis Blue, a smoky, sexy character portrayed by Law Ballard and Tio, a cocky, gay, Swedish boy portrayed by Emily Chong.
Experimental film maker, Campbell took the title of Dirty Rascal in a heat judged via audience applause.
The Dirty Rascal round consisted of 12 audience members enthusiastically strutting across the stage and dancing whilst the audience grabbed for their bums and admired their…footwear!
“It was a lot of hard work but I was really looking forward to seeing what the contestants got up to," said organiser Lenna Cumberbatch.
"They all put a lot of effort into their costumes and performances which was really nice to see and appreciated by all in attendance.”
The evening was held together by Rupartar Garter aka Rupa Sarkar and Helena Handbasket aka Helen Sandler dressed in full footmen garb, conducting the evening as a 'Royal Affair'.
The Castle Dancers, choreographed by Hagit Yakira and accessorised with inflatable guitars performed Play that Funky Music White Boy and Alicia Keys' Mr. Man.
The Schmooze Brothers rounded out the evening with a sexy interpretation of Frankie Goes To Hollywood hit Relax. DJs Cautious and Beboy Rocker provided the music.
Drag Kinging has a long London history with male impersonators such as Hettie King and Vesta Tilley from London’s music hall scene in the early 1900s.
The 1990s saw a resurgence of Drag Kings in London, throughout Europe and in the USA.
Since 2003, Club Wotever has given Drag Kings from around the world a London venue for their acts and the club is collaborator with the King of the Castle event.
